Happy International Identity Day

International ID Day drives awareness in countries with developed identity systems of the need for a legal identity for all.

About International Identity Day

The purpose of International Identity Day is to raise global awareness about the role of identity in empowering individuals to exercise their rights and responsibilities fairly and equitably in today’s society.

The ID-Day initiative has been led by ID4Africa since 2018. Since then, over 120 organizations have joined as coalition partners and some countries, like Nigeria, officially celebrate Identity Day as a national holiday.

  • September 16

The 16th of September references UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 16:9: “By 2030, provide legal identity for all, including birth registration.”

  • Friends of the coalition

We are proud to be a friend of the coalition and we have joined forces to advocate for the adoption of September 16 as International Identity Day.

Design competition

The International Identity Design Competition launched on June 16 and close to 200 artists from 24 African nations participated. The purpose of the design is to promote ID Day in a creative way to raise awareness of identity as a key enabler of inclusive socio-economic development in all countries.

The competition lasted 5 weeks and the international identity community casted their vote. Over 60% picked Alike Opaye from Ghana as the winner. The winning artist received a prize of $3,000 and the runners up each won $1,000. The winning design is the official theme for this year’s ID Day.
